This summer at KFGT, we are starting up the summer blog with the who, what, where, when, why, and how of studying the Word of God, whether it’s by verse, chapter, or topic. We also live in a technological age where we have access to the Word like no other time in history. Most of us have multiple copies of the Bible at home, we have Bible apps on our phones, and have access to thousands of good, solid biblical teachings online, from multiple trusted sources.

This causes me to think back to Bible times when they needed to travel to the synagogue to hear the Word of God, remember it, then take it home and share that with their family so they too could have the Word of God spoken to them. My encouragement to you today is this: take advantage of this amazing access to His Word. Study it for a few minutes, get captivated by a few verses, ask what God wants to show you, and before you know it, you realize you’ve been studying it for longer than you realized. His Word grants us life, peace, strength, direction, and truth. God’s Word – the Bible – is our baseline for knowing what real Truth is, no matter the era.

We find some great words of wisdom in 2 Timothy 2:15: “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” Let’s break down this verse, since it starts with “be diligent.” Studying God’s Word takes time, effort, and diligence. It’s not just reading words but understanding those words, who they were written to, understanding the time and place, and the context in which they’re written. We need to commit to the work if we want to be equipped – by God – for the work.

Next, we study not for the approval of others but for God. He is the one who will assess how we handle the Word, so that we can know Him better. This is being diligent to study – as a worker in His kingdom and a believer – so we need not be ashamed but be faithful in studying to apply His Word to our lives.

All this is to say that we need to understand the Word so that we can correctly & accurately handle the Word, using it to better ourselves and others. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul continues to teach Timothy more of the importance of the Word: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” I love the fact that as you study the Word of God, it reveals to us just how vast His Word is.

The more I study, it seems the less I realize that I know, and that causes me to study even more. I want to be equipped by God for everything He has in store for me because I know it’s going to be good and all for His Glory!
