In Acts 17, the Bereans are mentioned as those who “received the word with all readiness and searched the Scriptures daily.” And as God’s elect, soaking the Word of God should be a part of our lives, not as a routine but a lifestyle to learn, understand and draw closer to the Father. The Word of God is Christ Jesus, and Christ is Truth, and as children of God, the Holy Spirit has hotwired us to seek Truth. And where do we find this Truth, the Bible, written by the inspiration of God, and is beneficial for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17; paraphrased).
As Christians, to discover the details, we must strive to seek the Word daily, digging deeper and asking the Lord through prayer to guide us in our study of Scripture, to unpack the mysteries and vast wisdom contained within, and to ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in studying the Word of God exegetically. The Word of God illuminates the nature of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Godhead), and as it is written, the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Now, why study the Word of God? Here are some reasons I believe as Christians, we should immerse ourselves in the study of scripture:
To know God better:
- Jeremiah 9:23-24: Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.
- John 17:3: And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
For Guidance and Wisdom:
- Psalms 119:105: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
- Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
Spiritual Growth and Maturity:
- Colossians 2:6-7: Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
- Hebrews 5:12-14: For though by this time, you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the Word of Righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
- 1 Peter 2:2: Like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.
To know the will of God; to be Equipped for Good Works:
- Jeremiah 29:11-13: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
- Ephesians 2:10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
- Hebrews 13:20-21: Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
To Find Comfort and Encouragement:
- Psalm 119:50: This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.
- Romans 15:4: For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
- Isaiah 41:10: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
To Combat the enemy:
- James 4:7: Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
- Ephesians 6:11: Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
- 2 Corinthians 10: 3-5: For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
We live in a world filled with lies, teachings and patterns that oppose the Word of God. And in order not to conform to the patterns of the world, we must daily study the Word of God.
As I mentioned earlier, as we continue to study scriptures, we unravel mysteries. These mysteries come with questions, and the answers are in the scriptures, which sometimes lead to more mysteries and more questions. When this happens, do not fret but seek the Holy Spirit for guidance.
So should you encounter something new in a sermon, a conversation, during your daily devotion—pause for a moment, pray and ask the Lord for revelation, discuss it with fellow believers, and the Holy Spirit may/will lead you to digging deeper into the scriptures. The details you may discover will open your eyes even more. Just as the Lord said in the book Jeremiah, “you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”
Be blessed, my friends.
